In Loving Memory

Lou Formica

He is a also a retired NYC Sanitation Worker.

Lou Formica is one of those people you can never forget. To meet him is to love him. Whether it was at New Dorp High School, playing football, working on the Sanitation Department, enjoying his company at Hunter Mountain or the Hamptons, at his Moose Lodge, playing softball with him, or with his wife Judy as they raised their kids, he made an indelible impression. When you met Lou, this big affable guy was happy and full of life. He loved to meet and talk to people. Lou instantly made you feel good. He made you feel like you were his best friend.
Nobody enjoyed life and the people he met more than Lou Formica. That’s why the brain cancer that he’s been battling for the past decade is so tragic. It has slowly taken away his ability to do the things he loves and interact with his friends. One thing that his cancer has not done is diminish his spirit. He has remained positive. The strength and determination he has shown have been an inspiration to everyone who knows him. Jay Price highlighted Lou’s determination in his book “Thanksgiving 1959” in the chapter “Short, Choppy Steps”. These were the words used by Lou’s legendary football coach, Sal Somma, on how to dig in against a tough opponent. They became Lou’s personal mantra against his toughest opponent of all, cancer.
Lou has fought the good fight, but it has been costly. That is why the friends he loved so dearly have come together to repay him for his years of friendship. We are holding a celebration of Lou’s life on April 10, 2011. The affair will take place at the Staaten, 697 Forest Ave, Staten Island, N.Y. 10310 from 1-5 pm. The proceeds will go to help Lou’s family deal with the mounting costs that have resulted from his heroic battle. There are many ways you can help! Tickets to attend are $100 and include a buffet dinner and open bar. Dinner sponsorships are available. There is an electronic journal that will be displayed on screen during the cocktail hour and dinner. The journal will also be distributed to those attending on a disk. Donations of cash and prizes for our raffle are being accepted. Our friend Lou’s family needs your help!

Please support this good cause. Our hope is that everyone gives what they can afford. Don’t give till it hurts…give till it feels good, just the way Lou has made all of us feel his whole life.
